In thinking about what is in and out of our control, the amount of talent we have is completely outside of our control. Genetics and life circumstances are something we’re literally born into. Although it’s something we have we had no say in how much or how little we have of it.
So then the question is, ok this is what we have, what are we going to do with it? We can choose to commit to a practice and become skillful.
Skill is the result of us taking responsibility. We put ourselves on the hook and not giving ourselves room for excuses or grievances. We work towards what we can earn, not wonder why we were given so little.
For me, this idea of talent vs skill comes down to belief. If we lift our hands in surrender saying, “This is my fate, what more can I do?” We can’t expect ourselves to do courageous, generous work. But once we realize what we have is enough, we can start to build our craft, commit to the practice, and see a mission we want to accomplish.
